Bobsleigh entered the Olympic Winter Games program in 1924 in Chamonix, France and only men could compete. It originates from two skeleton sleds being attached together with a board and a steering mechanism like a steering wheel. The name of the sport appeared when competitors adopted the technique of bobbing back and forth inside the sled to increase its speed.
In October 1999, women’s bobsledding was added to the Olympic Winter Games program and women competed for the first time in the two-person event at Salt Lake City in 2002.
